The Evidence Pyramid: Understanding research study designs

The Evidence Pyramid: Understanding research study designs

During this session, we will review the basic designs of research studies and discuss their arrangement according to the Evidence Pyramid (from case series to systematic reviews). We will examine the strengths and limitations of each study design. Attendees will have a chance to practice using filters and useful tools in PubMed to limit results to specific study designs.

After the session, attendees will:

  • Recognize standard research study designs and understand their advantages and disadvantages
  • Understand the EBM evidence hierarchy and identify best available evidence
  • Use filters and tools like “Clinical Queries” to locate specific study designs in PubMed
