SciViz.NYC

SciViz.NYC

Bringing NYC-area visual science communicators, researchers, journalists, artists, and enthusiasts together for an event focused on visualizing science for analysis, education, inspiration, and provocation.

Hosted and sponsored by Mount Sinai, and co-sponsored by Scientific American, SciViz.NYC will be held at the Leon and Norma Hess Center for Science and Medicine, an elegant new half-million square-foot addition to the Mount Sinai Health System.

SciViz.NYC will feature a total of fifteen presenters, each one occupying a unique niche of the visual science communication world. Computational scientist Anthony Costa and neurosurgeon Joshua Bederson will co-present one of two keynote talks, focusing on their work in the Neurosurgery Simulation Core at Mount Sinai. Costa’s and Bederson’s research involves using haptic feedback neurosurgical simulators and advanced intraoperative 3D visualizations to improve outcomes and reduce complications in brain surgery. Illustrator and information designer Nigel Holmes will deliver the second keynote talk. Holmes, a former graphics director for Time Magazine whose recent client list includes Scientific American, National Geographic, and The New York Times, will discuss how he uses approachable, often playful graphics to make complex scientific concepts understandable to a general audience.
